THE GELATO PARKING CONTROVERSEY: On Jan. 11, 2011, everything was sweetness
and light… when they were in a huge shopping center: Homegrown: O-Gelato brings 'la dolce vita' to DeVargas Center "Our
guiding philosophy is la dolce vita, the Italian lifestyle," said David
Maple, co-owner of O-Gelato in DeVargas Center.
With his wife Shelby Fonley, Maple said, holding on to that vision —
simple foods, the simple life — is what led them to rethink the nature of their
business in the last year. (Both later
admitted they were Italian.)
Maple's background is in art — he worked
as a sculptor at the Allen Houser Foundry and did stints as a leatherworker,
saddlemaker and farrier (horseshoer), while his wife baked at home and ran a
Web-design business — but when it came time to make some life changes, food won
out.
Then they moved to a small mall in North
Guadalupe Street and La Dolce Vita
became Evil Vita: see next blog.
